       Ingredients How to?

  • Raw rice (Pacharisi) - 2 cups
  • Urad dal-1/4 cup
  • Boiled rice - 1cup
  • Coconut Milk - 1 cup
  • Sugar - 2 tbsp
  • Salt - As required
  • Water - 1cup

  1.  Soak raw rice and Urad dal for 4 hours.
  2. Put soaked rice and urad dal in a mixer and grind till smooth paste.
  3.  Add Coconut milk, salt and sugar.
  4. Mix well by your hand (wash hand).
  5. Keep the mixture closed to ferment for 7 hours in a warm place. (Add warm water in case cold climate).
  6. Heat the Appa Chatti (Cast iron pan with deep bottom).
  7. Wipe the vessel with oiled cloth.
  8. Pour the appam mixture.
  9. Lift off the stove and swirl the vessel.
  10. Pour oil round the appam.
  11. Close with lid for 5 minutes.
  12. Gently remove the appam from the vessel.
  13. Serve hot.

    Note: This can be prepared without Urad dal. (This way traditional vellappam is prepared)
    Tips: Mix Jaggery to get Sweet Appam. Coconut chutney is the best side dish for Sweet Appam.
