Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a condition in which loose or watery stools are passed frequently. When loose motions are accompanied by the passage of blood and mucus, the condition is called dysentery.

Diarrhea follows irritation or inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bowel by physical, chemical or bacterial agents.



Treatment of acute diarrhea involves:

1. Rest in bed.
2. Therapy with suitable drugs.
3. Correction of water and electrolyte losses.

Treatment of chronic diarrhea involves:
1. Rest in bed.
2. Therapy with suitable drugs.
3. Healthy balanced diet.

GUIDELINES FOR NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT OF DIARRHEA
Replenish the lost water and electrolytes through inclusion of plain water together with glucose water, coconut water, buttermilk, fruit juices, barley water, etc.

Start with fluid diet initially and then progress to soft bland diets later. Khichdi, puddings, breads, soups, fruit cream, custard, smoothies, etc can be given.

Diet should be given in small frequency at regular intervals.

Diet should be restricted in terms of spices, fried foods, fibers and processed foods.

Avoid smoking and alcoholic drinks.
