Many may turn their nose up at the idea of drinking their own urine, but advocates of urine therapy swear that it’s not only the best drink one can ever have, but also an elixir that confers longevity.

According to Indian mythology, urine therapy or Shivambu (holy water) was advocated by no less a figure than Lord Shiva himself. The Damartantra, dating over 5,000 years ago, has a most detailed discussion of urine therapy, with Lord Shiva teaching the therapy to his wife, Parvati, in over 107 verses.

In the 18th century, French dentists used to recommend rubbing one’s own urine on the teeth and gargling with it, for treatment of tooth disorders. American Dr John Armstrong demonstrated to the world the efficacy and propriety of auto-urine therapy by using it in the treatment of almost all diseases. His book, Water of Life, is based on his personal experiences and experiments with urine therapy.

It is well known that former Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai was a staunch protagonist of Urine Therapy. He not only used to practice urine therapy himself but also used to recommend it to others. In an interview to American Journalist Dan Rather, Morarji Desai spoke on the therapy for good about 60 minutes at a stretch. He stated that drinking urine is the perfect form of medical treatment for those who cannot afford medical treatment.

The Chaupal, a well watched youtube channel with 4.57L subscribers brought out a video highlighting the Urine Therapy practiced by the former PM. Same can be viewed here (Language: Hindi)

Most people consider urine to be a waste product expelled by the body. But the proponents of urine therapy believe that something is excreted not because it is toxic or poisonous or bad for the body, but simply because the body does not need that particular element at the time. Thus, urine is passed out of the body as a by-product. Urine therapists believe that since many of the elements found in urine have enormous medicinal value, reintroducing them into the body can bring enormous gains.

According to them, not only is urine a sterile body compound (purer than distilled water), but it is a nutrient-rich powerhouse. It contains literally thousands of compounds, many hormones, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, salts and numerous other nutritive and curative substances such as various amino acids, calcium, dopamine, melatonin, folic acid, iron, iodine, potassium, proteins, urea, zinc and many others. These help boost the body’s immune defences and stimulate healing. Urine also supplements the essential nutrients and makes up the deficiency of any nutrient in the body.

Among the useful substances said to be present in urine is urokinase, an enzyme that prevents the formation of blood clots in blood vessels and dissolves already formed clots. When such blood clots obstruct the flow of blood in blood vessels of the heart, a heart attack may be precipitated. Urokinase is already injected into the bodies of heart attack patients to abort an attack and to aid recovery.

Urine also has the hormone called erythropoietue that stimulates bone marrow to increase the rate of production of erythrocytes or red blood corpuscles. Thus, anaemic patients can benefit from auto-urine therapy. Urine also has prostaglandin, which is essential for the contraction of muscles of the uterus.

All these beneficial substances are present in urine in very finely divided and highly potentised forms. As a result, they are quickly absorbed from the stomach and the intestines within a short time of the urine being imbibed.

Urine is used for massage, for dressing wounds and boils and is also supposed to work well for chronic or acute disorders like diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, fever and even arthritis. Teeth and eye problems, including conjunctivitis, respond particularly well to urine therapy. People who regularly drink their urine — therapists usually advise a cupful (150-200 ml) once a day to maintain health — enjoy freedom from flu, hepatitis, colds and coughs and rarely fall ill.
